Nexium® and Prilosec are linked to Kidney failure
and Other Serious Side Effects

side effects

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are powerful drugs that can stop heartburn and reduce acid in the stomach. Unfortunately, they have also proven themselves to be dangerous.

PPIs can have unexpected side effects including kidney damage, kidney disease, and even outright kidney failure. They can also lead to bone fractures.

“Case reports have suggested that this class of drugs may be linked to acute kidney injury, which may in turn lead to chronic injury or failure. The objective of this study was to determine if an association between PPIs and kidney failure exists and to estimate an effect size for the relationship between PPI use and renal disease.”
BMC Nephrology
The results were:
  • Renal disease was positively associated with PPI use even after controlling for potential confounding conditions. After removing patients with potential confounding disease states from the study population, the number of cases and controls was lower, but the relationship between renal disease and PPI use remained consistent.
  • Patients with a renal disease diagnosis were twice as likely to have used a prescription PPI.
  • Studies show that regular use of Nexium® has caused kidney disease and renal failure in some patients, which can cause serious injury or even death.
  • Treating these kidney conditions can require dialysis, kidney transplant and grafts. The medical treatment of kidney failure is expensive and doesn’t always save a patient’s life.

Nexium® Lawsuit Information

Attorneys are reviewing kidney injury claims nationwide for Nexium kidney failure cases.

Although it has been used by millions of people and is widely thought to be safe, several studies suggest that side effects of Nexium® and other PPIs may increase the risk of serious kidney problems, which were not adequately disclosed by the drug maker.

If information had been provided to consumers and the medical community about the potential link between Nexium® and kidney injury, many people may have avoided serious and life-threatening complications by limiting their use of the drug or an alternative treatment.

The US National Library of Medicine issued the following warning:

"People who use certain drugs for chronic heartburn may be at increased risk of developing kidney disease, a new study suggests.”

The studies revealed the following harmful Nexium side effects are possible:

PPI lawsuit
  • Acute Kidney Injury
  • Acute Interstitial Nephritis
  • Chronic Kidney Disease
  • Kidney Failure
  • Dialysis Treatment
  • Kidney Transplant Surgery
  • Death

Already, hundreds of people have filed lawsuits against the makers of these drugs. They include patients who took Nexium®, Prilosec, Prevacid®, and other PPI medications.

However, many patients don’t know there’s a connection between their heartburn medication and kidney failure.

Any patient who has suffered kidney damage after taking a proton pump inhibitor should speak to a proton pump inhibitor injury lawyer. The consultation is free and risk-free, so you have nothing to lose. Contact The Relion Group today for more information on your eligibility.

Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI)

PPI Lawsuit

Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) are a group of heartburn drugs used for long-lasting reduction of gastric acid production. They are the most potent inhibitors of acid secretion available.

PPIs are among the most widely sold drugs in the world as a type of medication that helps with heartburn and acid reflux, but they can lead to harmful side effects including kidney damage and complete renal failure.

Proton Pump Inhibitors Timeline

The Journal of the American Society of Nephrology posted an official study in February of 2016, revealing the association between proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use and the risk of acute interstitial nephritis.

The February 2016 issue of JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association, published the results of a study that indicated long-term use of PPI medications may increase the risk of developing chronic kidney disease (CKD). The study indicated that the 10-year risk of CKD in PPI users was 20% -50% higher than those who had not taken the heartburn medications. The longer a person takes the medications, the greater the risk, and patients who took PPI medications more than once a day were more likely to develop kidney problems.

PPI use has been linked to other serious side effects in the past including a 2006 study which showed an increased risk of bone fractures in the elderly. This study resulted in a 2010 warning issued by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding bone fracture risk.

In 2011 the U.S. National Library of Medicine posted “Proton pump inhibitors and risk of fractures,“ an analysis of 11 international studies.
