Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI)

Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) are a group of heartburn drugs used for long-lasting reduction of gastric acid production. They are the most potent inhibitors of acid secretion available.
PPIs are among the most widely sold drugs in the world as a type of medication that helps with heartburn and acid reflux, but they can lead to harmful side effects including kidney damage and complete renal failure.
Proton Pump Inhibitors Timeline
The Journal of the American Society of Nephrology posted an official study in February of 2016, revealing the association between proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use and the risk of acute interstitial nephritis.
The February 2016 issue of JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association, published the results of a study that indicated long-term use of PPI medications may increase the risk of developing chronic kidney disease (CKD). The study indicated that the 10-year risk of CKD in PPI users was 20% -50% higher than those who had not taken the heartburn medications. The longer a person takes the medications, the greater the risk, and patients who took PPI medications more than once a day were more likely to develop kidney problems.
PPI use has been linked to other serious side effects in the past including a 2006 study which showed an increased risk of bone fractures in the elderly. This study resulted in a 2010 warning issued by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding bone fracture risk.
In 2011 the U.S. National Library of Medicine posted “Proton pump inhibitors and risk of fractures,“ an analysis of 11 international studies.
